NEW: Alage Scrubber on Frag Tank

I originally made an algae scrubber on the 30G frag tank, which was fed by the drain. But the flow was pretty low (200-300gph), and it would slowly clog and back up the drain. It was also lighted by a CF flood light, and I don’t think it was getting enough light.

So I recently decided to totally redo it and feed it with a dedicated pump and new lighting.

Parts:
Mag 7 Pump (700gph)
2X 14″ GE Slim Line Fluorescent Fixtures, Model #00413, F8T5 8W 12″ Bulbs
1″ Schedule40 PVC
13″ x 10″ Screen
1/2″ Rainbird Plumbing Parts
1/2″ Vinyl Tubing

Scrubber:
So the scrubber itself is pretty explanatory. One inch PVC across the top, with about a 13.5″ x 1/8″ slot cut into it with a Dremel+Cutoff Wheel. I connected it to a union for easy removal for cleaning, to a 90″ elbow, connected to the Rainbird barbed fittings down to the Mag 7 Pump.

Lighting:
So I basically attached a DIY swinging door to to stand with a DIY hinge, and I screwed the lights to the door. For the door I used the smoked acrylic. It’s cool because it shades the light at night, yet it still allows me to see through it and monitor what’s happening in the sump. The lights are linkable, so I only needed one AC plug. I left the cover on the top light as a splash guard since it’ll be above the sump, but I took off the cover from the bottom light as it’s outside the sump.

I’ve been having major algae issues with the frag tank, so hopefully the algae scrubber will help.
