The 14 XP-E (Royal blue) and 14 XP-G (Cool white) Cree LEDs finally arrived on Friday, and I wasted no time to finish the 28 LED build for my frag tank. Basically the same concept as the 8LED build. But for this one I used the dimmable Meanwell drivers.
The fixture itself is 29″ x 4″, made some awesome Aluminum channels from Home Depot. I bought 2 sets, chopped them up to size, riveted them together side by side, and then put the other halves perpendicular. This gives the fixture plenty of surface area for heat dissipation.
I used the left piece for the main part where the LEDs attach, and the right piece was used for the sides:
Wiring
(please reference https://reefblog604.wordpress.com/2011/03/18/8led-build/ for wiring/soldiering details, it’s essentially the same concept):
Rubber grommets to run wires through:
As you can see, I wrapped a the strip of 48″ LEDs around the back, side, and a bit around the front of the fixture:
Ballast Disconnects for quick removal of fixture to drivers:
I have two Evercool 80mm Aluminum fans screwed into the top of the fixture, and the fixture remains slightly cool to the touch at full load:
Nice build but I have some questions because I’ll be doing something similar. The questions are: whats the size of the frag tank, what types of corals are you growing and last but not least what are your par ranges?
It’s a 29 gallon tank, I’m keeping SPS, LPS, Zoas, and sorties. I dunno the par rating.
